This smoothie is summer in a glass! It’s so refreshing whenever temperatures soar, and it’s perfect for summertime activities. I first started making this smoothie after we hiked a steep mountain in the blazing summer sun. It was super hot, and when we got back I started foraging the fridge and found some watermelon. From there I blended it with frozen strawberries and downed a 32-ounce jar in record time.  It’s definitely the perfect thirst quencher. People think I must be throwing the biggest BBQ party ever. And they’re always stunned to learn I’m actually just buying that much watermelon for me and my husband. Since we’re both crazy about watermelon, we tend to go through a lot! We’ve developed a couple of watermelon drinks and smoothies over time. So you’ll be seeing our favorite drink to take hiking soon – the Watermelon Thirst Quencher. I never quite got around to getting the measurements down last year. But this year’s a different story, and I’ve got you covered in the watermelon department this season!

Let’s get started by talking about the ingredients for this Strawberry Watermelon Smoothie

Watermelon – either fresh or frozen works here in this smoothie. In fact, I love using frozen watermelon along with frozen berries for a super frosty smoothie. This smoothie is super simple, so it really matters that you have a great-tasting watermelon. Otherwise, your smoothie will be bland. Strawberries – I always use frozen berries here with either fresh or frozen watermelon. Lemon or lime juice – fresh is a must here because you can really taste the difference in this simple smoothie. Just a touch of zippy citrus juice goes a long way toward pulling the flavors together and keeping this from being too sweet. Mint – is a fun variation I love but Tyler isn’t as fond of. Only add it if you love the fresh flavor of mint, and don’t be tempted to add too much. I like to blend the smoothie first, then add a few mint leaves at the end and blend only until little green bits remain.

Now let’s make this Strawberry Watermelon Smoothie recipe step by step

Step 1: First, we’ll start by removing the rind from the watermelon. I had some mini watermelons, so I cut all of the rind off like you would for an orange. But when I have regular-sized watermelon, I cut slices first. Then I cut cubes across the slices before cutting off the watermelon rind, leaving the cubes behind. Step 2: Cube up your watermelon. I like to keep the cubes small so I can fit more in the blender. Step 3: Measure out the frozen strawberries, and juice the lemon or lime. Step 4: Next, add the cubed-up watermelon to the blender. You can see the blender will be full right up to the max line. Step 5: Next, it’s time to blend the watermelon to make more room in the blender. You will have about 8 cups of watermelon pieces, and 5-6 cups of watermelon purée after blending. Eight cups of watermelon is about 2.5 pounds. The watermelon that I bought weighed 18 pounds, so I’ll be making this every day this week! Step 6: Finally, blend until smooth, and enjoy right away!
