I saw this idea floating around the internet a while ago. But… like most things that I pin, I forgot about it until recently. I just made one small change to the original idea: I put mine in a decorative container because I wasn’t crazy about seeing a bowl of baking soda hanging out in my living room. This air freshener is perfect because it’s cheap and easy. I like that it’s so easy to change your scents with the seasons, or from one room to another. I used a votive sized candle holder that I already had for my container. Since I’m not burning a lot of candles in the middle of the summer, I figured it would be perfect. Candle holders make and ideal container for your scented mixture because they have higher sides to hide the baking soda. The preparation is really simple: just mix together baking soda with your choice of essential oils. I’ve been loving the lemon-lavender combination for the summertime. I like a light scent in the room, but if you’re going for something stronger I would double the amount of essential oil called for in the recipe. Place the mixture in your choice of container and enjoy a wonderful smelling room. The air freshener in my living room sits in a sunny window and it makes the scent a little stronger in this room. Tip: Every week or two, stir your air freshener to ‘re-awaken’ the smell. I noticed that mine lasted for about a month before I needed to add more essential oils.
